The eye is one of the most delicate organs of the body and extra care and caution are usually taken to protect the eyes which is why an eye defect can only be treated or managed through the help of an ophthalmologist. What are eye defects?

Vision is the ability to see, which is possible when the retina of the eye focuses on an object and in situations where the vision gets blurred or distorted, it is known as an eye defect.

The major defects of the eye include:

  • Myopia. Also known as shortsightedness is an eye defect that affects one’s ability to see distant objects only the nearer ones. It is caused by two major reasons, first is the high converging power of the eye lens. Because the ciliary muscles are not well relaxed causing the lens becomes thin and the converging power reduces. The second is due to the irregularity in the long shape of the eyeball which would cause the focal point to be in front of the retina rather than on it.

correction – this can be done by adjusting the distance of the object in the vision so it looks or appears closer. A concave lens is employed. It will decrease the converging power of the eye lens and allow images to form on the retina.

  • Hypermetropia. Also known as long-sightedness, is a defect of the eye that affects its ability of it to see far objects. also could be caused by two reasons, one of which is the low converging power and the second is the shape of the eyeball which could be short causing the images to form behind the retina. Correction – this can be done by trying to make the images form on the retina through the use of a convex lens.
  • Astigmatism. This is a common defect of the eye caused by uneven focus of the cornea which causes some images to be sharper than others. Correction – this can be corrected using a cylindrical lens.
  • Presbyopia. This occurs mostly in older people as they age. It can occur in conjunction with myopia, astigmatism or hypermetropia. Correction can be done by using a bifocal lens that uses either the concave or convex lens at the top and bottom of the spectacles.
  • Cataract. This eye defect is mostly associated with old age. It is when the vision becomes blurry, occurs when a membrane forms over the eyes lens causing vision to deteriorate over the years. Can be corrected through surgery and may cause vision loss when left untreated.
